PurcellRoom, SouthBankCenter, London

January 28, 2008

Suzy at the Purcell Room in London last night.  Small theatre (360 seats) in prestigious Arts venue on the south bank of the Thames.  A sell-out. Judging by the comments of Mike from Newcastle this was a better venue than there, perfect viewing for all (especially for my wife and me in the centre of Row A !) and brilliant accoustics.  Terrific performance from Suzy (and Will Barrow on piano, Pat Bergeson on guitar and harmonica - I didn't catch the name of the other guitarist/bass player) and they seem to have repeated the songs listed by Mike. (NewCastle Review)

English audiences are unlike American ones and tend to remain perfectly quiet throughout a song and then clap politely at the end (with an occasional appreciative verbal outcry). Suzy must be used to this by now as she has been visiting us since the late 80's but even she commented last night that it was "scary"!

Some years ago I saw Allison Moorer on what I think was her first visit to the UK.  She was opening for Tricia Yearwood and, after a couple of songs that had received the usual English response, commented that she had been warned about it by Tricia who had said "Just because they are quiet, it doesn't mean they don't like you!".  And in Allison's case of course we liked her.  And in Suzy's case?  - well, I don't think 'like' quite says what we think.

Eventually last night Suzy, as she usually does, got the audience to join in Eat at Joes. I would recommend to Suzy that in future she does that much earlier in the show (in England) as the audience seemed to lose some inhibitions and were definitely more vocal afterwards.

Doug Crider was working hard behind the scenes but didn't come on stage at all which think is a shame- it's fun when he and Suzy are on stage together and there's a bit of banter.  After the show, when Suzy was meeting and greeting, I think he was surprised to be recognised and to be asked to be photographed with my wife but, apart from his performing, his song-writing adds so much to Suzy's shows and we don't think he gets enough credit. What a fantastic team they make.

Elizabeth Cook opened for Suzy and did what Mike has described.  I thought she was great. She had a charming, self-deprecatory manner, pretending to be a not-very-bright hilly-billy from the backwoods but actually was a very bright, bubbly and very talented performer.

A great show and Suzy said she is committed to coming back regularly to the UK.  I don't know if that means she is personally committed or contractually committed.  I don't care actually, as long as she makes frequent visits!  And she was reminded by me (and others) that she would be welcome back to Basingstoke where she couldn't really perform earlier this year, in the Wine Women and Song tour, due to losing her voice.
