Wine, Women and Song
Sheffield, UK

First off, a note for those that actually reside in the UK who may not have been able to make the show, the tour is coming back to the UK in May so make sure you get your tickets! Now for the actual review:

The show was held at the Sheffield City Hall. There are actually two performance areas in the City Hall. This event was held in the Memorial Hall. The hall was not that big but it certainly wasn't small. It was just the right size to have a good sized crowd but still maintain a more intimate atmosphere.

The stage was set up like a living room. There were three chairs, little tables for the wine, and a couch at the back. The setup allowed all three of the women to remain on stage the entire time. In between the songs, they bantered back and forth so the stage set up really suited the style of show perfectly.

Before I go too much further, I have to give a shout out to Juliette from Leicester at Junction 23 off the M1. Because of her, actually her sick friend who wasn't able to make it, I was able to swap out my balcony seat for a front row seat. In no small way did that make my week. Ok, back to the show:

The performance started around 8. Suzy was stage left, Gretchen Peters was in the middle and Matraca Berg was stage right. Gretchen opened the show with Waiting on the Light to Turn Green. Suzy provided perfect harmonies. Then, Matraca sang One More is Never Enough. Suzy opened with Aces which was flawless as usual. They rotated songs in that order all night. Their voices blended wonderfully as they sang backup for each other.

The song selections provided touching, sad and funny moments and generally everything in between. Each song got a little introduction about how it originated. I always enjoy finding out about the origins of songs, so that was a real plus.

One particularly touching moment was when Matraca shared that her grandfather had to sell his farm a few years ago because of the difficulties in making a living as a farmer these days. She wrote a song about it called Dreaming Fields and it was really hard for her to get through it. It was a tremendous song. Once the song was over Suzy shared that the song really rang true for her being from Illinois and knowing lots of farmers who now sell cars.

There were many light-hearted moments throughout the show. Suzy bought a bit of time for Matraca and told this really silly joke about a pirate and a steering wheel. I will leave the punch line to your imagination. It was actually pretty funny. Silly jokes aside, all three have such a good sense of humour (had to put that in for the UK folks) and it really showed.

The songs Suzy sang that evening were Aces, Night Rider's Lament, Hammer and Nail, Eat at Joe's, If you Leave Me Now (This was just excellent), Outbound Plane, plus a few more. You'll have to go to the show to find out the rest! :)

I would highly recommend going to the show when they come to your area if you enjoy an ensemble show complete with wonderful songs that run the whole gamete of emotions complete with wonderful harmonies.

Take care,
Kim in MD (writing from jolly ol' England)
