If I had to choose just two words for Suzy's show this early in the evening, I would call it "bad ass!" You'll see why as you continue to read: At 6:32 p.m., Suzy made her way to the small stage with the band, Chris Donahue on bass, Pat Bergeson on guitar, Will Barrow on piano, and Todd London on drums. Suzy was wearing a white and blue top, capri jeans with skulls on the cuffs and sandals. It was a rockin' outfit! She made sure that everyone was doing well and asked if anyone was going to be doing anything over July 4th. As she picked up her guitar, she noted, "Pat tuned up my guitar and he told me to stay away from the tuning pegs." She told him that she could tune her guitar and that he should tune to her. Pat being Pat, he said "No!" Just then, Suzy kicked into "Outbound Plane." It was a great start to the evening, already! Suzy moved her capo and asked "Do we need to be in E flat for this?" Getting the approval, she said she was going to cheat and pokes a comment that her guitar isn't tuned. After getting settled, she moved into "Aces." She lets everyone know that there is a television special that's going to air as Ian Tyson is celebrating his 75th birthday! Suzy talks about the great work that he's done and says that Ian had bought a barn and named it "Suzy Bogguss Memorial Barn" with the royalties of this next song, "Someday Soon." Suzy being Suzy, she touched the tuning pegs and says, "Look Pat, I'm touching them." Of course, the audience got a laugh from that. Pat lets the soundboard guy know that there's a slapping sound coming from Suzy's guitar. They tried to bring the volume down, but that didn't work. Suzy said, "This next song calls for a slap." She looks out in the back of the room and says, "It probably needs a new battery, right Doug?" She said that she kept telling Doug that it needed a new battery and continued by saying, "Maybe he needs a new battery." There was an "Oooh" from the audience and she assured that the spousal digs are nothing to them. It happens all the time. Just at this moment, a gentleman sitting one table over from me shouted, "Tell us about the new CD!" Suzy was surprised by this and thanked the man for helping her with the plugs. She talks briefly about the new album, telling the audience that she recorded it in NYC and that it will be coming out on Sept. 4, 2007. After getting her guitar back with a new battery from Doug, Suzy went into "Hey Cinderella." After this song, she told the audience that they were lucky. "There's nothing behind the scenes here." She decided this would be a good time to get into some Swing material and the band kicked it off with "Straighten Up and Fly Right." Afterwards, Suzy announced that the band had only done this song once during rehearsal and thought they were great! Everyone had agreed! As a matter of fact, Suzy said that Will should be an idol after the killer solo he played. She got off track by talking about a magnet that she had seen on a refrigerator in a green room one night. It was about Carl Hanson and it said "Universal Idol" on it. Suzy didn't know who Carl Hanson was, so she was going to Google him when she had time. Moving on, Suzy continued with the show by saying, "I have a soft heart for lonely waitress songs." Folks thought that "Eat At Joe's" was next, but she said, "Nope, not yet." Here, she did "Sweetheart (Waitress in a Donut Shop)." After this song, she turned and asked, "Will, do you wanna do a duet?" Of course, he said "Sure!" And together, they did "Cupid Shot Us Both with One Arrow." I was very impressed by the vocals, but then again, I couldn't expect anything less from Will Barrow! It was a great arrangement! Just then, the gentleman from the next table shouted, again, "Tell us about your new website!" Suzy, again, was surprised and thanked him again for more plugs. She was impressed that he was on the ball and told the waiting staff that she wanted to buy the whole table a round of drinks. Suzy continued and talked about the new website and said that folks could go and pre-order the new CD and stream the songs on their computer before the CD arrives. A woman in the audience shouted, "The first 500 copies will be signed." Suzy's reply was, "500? I guess I'm gonna have my work cut out for me!" She also said that they were working on webisodes and they wanted to put in clips of the concerts that Suzy was doing. She announced that there was video being shot, right now, so people better make sure they are looking good. Just then, she asked "Mister, are you supposed to use that here?" I turned around and of course, it was Mutt Merritt who was doing the recording! Mutt replied, "I never was good at following directions." Just then, Suzy picked up her guitar and moved into "Busride." Of course, what would a night be without a Suzy joke? This one that she told was just out of the blue. No one was really expecting it. "Why do squirrels swim on their backs? To keep their nuts dry!" Just then, she kicked into "If You Leave Me Now." Here, Suzy took the opportunity to open up the request line. The first request was "Letting Go." Afterwards, Suzy told the audience, "I just dug out this tune and it was written by Tony Arata." She continued, "He had written some great songs, including one for Garth Brooks." She cut herself off by saying that her cocktail hour didn't start early enough. She forgot that the show was going to start at 6:30 and she only started her cocktail hour at 6. But, she moved on and mentioned the song that Garth recorded was "The Dance." She went into "Part of Me." Afterwards, she commented on how good the lyrics are, especially the "penny in the river." Another request came out for "Burnin' the Toast" and Suzy asked if the band would come out and help her on this one. It didn't turn out to be as good as Suzy had hoped and she basically made up the lyrics as she went along. Although, she did get the chorus right! That should count for something. I had made a request for "Under the Gun" and her reply to that was, "'Under the Gun?' You thought the last one was bad!" She got her guitar and kicked into "Give Me Some Wheels." At this point, the band didn't go back on break, but stayed and finished out the rest of the show with Suzy. Afterwards, she commented on the radio stations in Maryland and how nice they are. She said, "Radio didn't like me as 'bad ass.'" She talked about learning this song in Centennial, WY. She invited the audience to sing with her, but said, "When the yodeling comes, just shut up." That got another big laugh from the audience and Suzy did "Night Rider's Lament." This next song, Suzy said it was her favorite song ever. The writer had gone on to do some great things, including musicals – things that she couldn't record and mess up. Just then, she kicked into high gear, once again, with "No Way Out." Suzy was having so much fun and got right into it, she ended up breaking a nail at the end of the song! Pat leaned over and offered her some press-on nails and showed his nails off to the audience. They went into details about how the nails stay on by using super glue. Suzy talked about how they did a show at St. Mary's College with an orchestra the night before and had a great time. And, she concluded the evening with "Drive South." After leaving the stage for a brief moment, Suzy and the band came back out for an encore. She complimented the audience and said, "I always have a great time here. I never know what's going to happen and you guys are always great." Suzy went into "Eat at Joe's" and even though she didn't stress the audience's part, we all came in on cue and got "eat at Joe's." And to close out the night, she and the band did "One More for the Road." It was a great evening and since I was hanging around for the 9:30 p.m. show, it was bound to get better!! Mindy |
