It was 8:04 p.m. when Suzy made her appearance with the band, wearing a white top and jeans with a mauve shawl and a pair of sandals on her feet. Suzy starts off by telling folks in the front tables that they are in the danger zone as she has a habit of letting things fly. She goes into telling the audience that she, Doug, and Ben had taken an RV up to Maine and they've had lobster everyday, this week. "The vegetable of the week? Potato!" Ben loves lobster and when they eat it in Nashville, which by then, it's been 6 months, he usually makes the lobster speak, "Quick, put me out of my misery!" That got a great laugh from the audience. Just then, Suzy opened with "Outbound Plane." Afterwards, Suzy says that this is the perfect venue, because Carol (the owner of the venue) has everything! She's especially got things for the women. As the crowd chuckles, she asks, "Too soon to share?" She apologized and went into "Someday Soon." Suzy kicked off her sandals and a comment came from the crowd, "Now you're a Mainer." She thought that it would help with all the food she ate. Suzy informs the crowd that the next song that she's going to do had made her learn that music is interpreted differently and it can't be taken away, which is a good thing. She nearly played the song in the wrong key, but Will "saved her from a train wreck" as Suzy put it. She started into "Aces." Afterwards, Suzy made a note that it was a Cheryl Wheeler song. This next song, Suzy said she had written with Gary Scruggs. They had talked about the days of AP Carter and they wanted to write something that was simple, which is good, since Suzy only knows three chords. The crowd laughed and Suzy played "Hammer and Nail." Afterwards, she introduced the band: Will Barrow on piano, Todd London on percussion, and Chris Donahue on bass. Suzy also introduced her husband, Doug, on stage. This hit went to 46. The audience laughed. Suzy continued, "After 47, 46 was good!" This song was written by Merle Haggard and Suzy went into "Somewhere Between." After the song, Suzy said she couldn't look at Doug and thought she was going to bust out. As she put down her guitar, she stated, "The band can be in tune now." She talked about having her Swing album out and said she was going to do a Nat King Cole song. Suzy and the band went into "Straighten Up and Fly Right." While she was singing, her bracelet was getting caught on the shawl that she was wearing and afterwards, she shouted "I'm done suffering for fashion!" The crowd laughed as she threw the bracelet on to the stage. She, then, said that she was going to do a song that she hadn't done in a while. "Nice disclaimer, isn't it?" And she went into "Burnin' the Toast." While singing the song, there were some words that didn't make sense, which she had noted after the performance. Suzy said that she had to make the song faster so that she could make the high notes. The words didn't matter. Suzy noted that this next song was done with an orchestra during the summer and she just loved it. With that, she went into "Someone to Watch Over Me." Afterwards, she stated "Mushy stuff. And, another mushy song that I've done a few times is on my new record that comes out on Sept. 4th, Sept. 4th, Sept. 4th." As the audience laughs, she mentioned that the record could be preordered on her website, SuzyBogguss.com – 2 g's, 2 s's. Just then, Suzy and the band went into "Heaven." Afterwards, she noted that she's heard some wonderful stories. Just a side note, here: There was a woman sitting behind me who had gotten really emotional with the song and thankfully, I had some tissues on hand to pass to her. Suzy said that she had written this next song with Matraca Berg. She said, "I know words that other people don't… Because I make them up." It's a song about learning that things don't always go well during a marriage, even after getting that brand new toaster. Suzy kicked into "Hey, Cinderella." At 8:56 p.m. there was intermission. At 9:23 p.m., Suzy came back out on stage, solo. She said that she just loves this venue and thinks it's great for the performers and the community. She also jokes, saying, "The guys are union and playing a game of pool - they don't care what I'm doing." She told the story of how she traveled a lot and was able to learn new things everywhere she went. She went into the first swing tune that she'd learned, "Ain't Misbehavin'." During the solo of the song, she said "There's a break, here. Sorry, I'm not John Hartford" and continues on. Afterwards, Suzy says "At some point, I've learned that I don't like to practice." The crowd laughs as she continues, "This is me practicing live." This next song came from the Aces album and it was written by Tony Arata, who had written a song by Garth "somebody." Just then, she went into "Part of Me." Suzy continued with how she got started, traveling around in a camper truck and had traveled to Centennial, WY – population 50. After, she said, "This is my theme song" and did "Night Rider's Lament." "Is it ok if I play a new song from my new record?" The crowd gave a great applause as Suzy continued, "It comes out Sept. 4th and don't forget the preordering!" She and the guys kicked into "The Bus Ride." After, Suzy noted to the audience that she recorded the record at Tony Bennett's studio, which was literally 4 feet away from the train tracks. There were certain times that they weren't able to record, as the train was rolling through. "It was like Nashville meets the New Yorkers," and Suzy mentions playing with guys from David Letterman Show and Saturday Night Live. She asks, "Is the pitch good? Pretty soon, it'll be 'Buy this!'" The next song that Suzy was going to do was an oldie. She explains that her son, Ben, loves the 60's music and it was so simple. So, Suzy went home and invited Will to help her mess around with it. Just then, Suzy went into "If You Leave Me Now." For the next song, Suzy needed the audience's participation. It was another song that her friend, Matraca, had written. She explained the part that the crowd would sing and of course, this was "Eat at Joe's." The crowd really laid it on thick and Suzy's comment was "Hearty crowd!" And afterwards, Suzy said, "It's time to make you cry again." She went into "Letting Go." Then, it was "No Way Out," and "Drive South." Suzy and the guys left the stage and after a long standing ovation and applause, they all came back out and asked "Are we doing this one first?" Then, she leans into the microphone and says "We're doing two." The audience laughed as she continued, "I was never good with secrets!" Suzy kicked it with "Cowboy's Sweetheart." She noted that Patsy Montana had written this song and sold a million copies during the Great Depression. When she died, she still had dates on the books! This is the way that Suzy would like to go. Afterwards, Suzy said that she hadn't done this next song in a while – another disclaimer. She asked the audience to sing along and maybe they could keep her from singing the wrong lyrics. And with this, Suzy, the band, and the audience sang "Take It To the Limit." And with that, the night ended. It was a great show and everyone had a great time! Also, for those of you who were wondering, I did ask Suzy where Pat Bergeson was and she had explained to me that he was in Poland for the week. Not to mention that she had a hard time getting all the guys here with the bad weather that's been happening. But, all in all, it turned out to be a beautiful night of fun and music! Mindy |
