The goddess – Bloomington, IL
The Show's Christmas theme was evident as soon as the curtain parted. Large snow flake light strings hung from the ceiling as the band broke into an instrumental segue before the arrival of the goddess. The band was; At the meet and greet I mentioned to Suzy that I would be writing a review of the evening, she responded that I should mention her once in it. I am going to try to follow her directive. As I have already used her name, as the review progresses, I will use a * instead of her name. * came out from stage right to an adoring audience dress in a royal blue jacket, a royal blue cammy, black skirt and hose along with black suede boots. Looking like she had been "working out" and was radiantly glowing. She wore a diamond snow flake broach which completed her ensemble but was only outdone by the twinkle in her eyes; this would be a special night. A quick hello and the band launched into; Winter Wonderland - * danced about while shaking hand bells ringing in the Christmas spirit. She then launched into Mr. Santa having mentioned that she had recorded this with Chet. * then slowed things down a bit for "Do you hear what I hear". I love how she owns the song. You'd swear you are hearing it for the first time.
"Outbound Plane" followed by "Someday Soon" as * paid tribute to Ian Tyson and his * Bogguss memorial horse barn. Letting go paved the way for "Eating at Joe's" which * told us was our time to shine in singing the chorus. "Drive South" rocked the end of the first set and * promised she would be back in 15 minutes. We took this opportunity to visit again with each other. Mary and Dennis are the best hosts! Fifteen minutes went by quickly, just enough time to have some wassail, and * came back on stage put on her guitar, started to strum "O Beautiful star Bethlehem." SOOZ, you need a bass or (AHEM) a baritone to fill out the sound on that song. Rus you were right, this is an awesome song and it was done downright purdy. Picking up the pace, * and the band went into "Two Step", written on a wintry day coming back from a show in the cold white north. The mood of the show takes a turn here as we are treated to some numbers from "Sweet Danger". Bus Ride and then "If you leave me now" of which * told the audience she received a call from Peter Cetera on how well he liked the song, but unfortunately she wasn't home… * then picked up her nylon string Taylor guitar and lead the band into the song "Everything". I like this song for a number of reasons, the least of which I mentioned to * back in 2004 at the Blueberry festival in Plymouth,Indiana that she should try to do some scat, she had told me she could never do that. Well peeps, on this song she does a small amount of scat. "Zip zip zinga don…wanna." I'm just so proud. She showed off her chops on the Taylor and should do more solo work, but it's hard to do when you are backed by Pat Bergeson, besides you're paying him to play! * then dedicated the next song to all the servicemen who won't be home this year, "I'll be home for Christmas" was done absolutely beautifully. Again * making the song her own. Next up was some fun. * introduced some funny looking guy as her husband Doug (just kidding) and they did a playful rendition of "Baby it's cold outside". She told us how they first met, she was cutting a demo and he offered up a song "Hopeless Romantic" for her to cut. That led to more studio time, Pizza, darts and something about her needing health insurance. But on this night she played hard to get and his relaxed nature was a perfect role to her aloof character. I enjoy their version much more than Delbert and hers on the CD. Doug you nailed it too! * then did one for the kids or the kid in all of us, "Rudolf the red nosed reindeer", which had the alternate lyrics thrown in by Denny after the lines. For example: The show slowed for a wish for the audience "Have yourself a Merry Christmas". * left the stage only to return a few minutes later to do an encore. Before she could start someone let out" Do Sweetheart" which * replied, since you got it in first, we'll do it. The last number of the night was an exquisite "Silent night". * walked in front of people in the front row and let them sing into the microphone. One of them was an 86 year old grandmother who was celebrating her birthday that night. I reckon she touched our hearts as much as anything that night, singing a song that meant so much to many. * left the stage after telling us to meet her out front waving to the crowd. We were greeted warmly with hugs and smiles.
And I only mentioned you once !! David H. |
